It’s no secret that ChatGPT has revolutionised many things across many sectors. It’s fast and relatively simple to use. But, to get a strong output, you have to give a strong input.
Since its launch, we’ve seen AI-generated resumes, cover letters, and outreach messages. You name it, we’ve seen it. Some are fantastic. Others, not so much.
But, we can’t deny that ChatGPT has the potential to be incredibly helpful for job seekers. Whether you’re looking for interview tips, need some help with your CV, or want to build a personal brand on LinkedIn to boost your credibility, ChatGPT claims to be able to help.
In this series, we’ll explore and review ChatGPT’s capabilities for candidates. We’ve already reviewed how ChatGPT can help with a job application and job search, so now let’s focus on building a personal brand.
There are four key things to consider when building a personal brand on LinkedIn as a job seeker.
Luckily, ChatGPT can help with most of this! Let’s break it down…
Your LinkedIn profile is your landing page for prospective employers. If they like your content, they’ll click to view your profile and should be able to quickly see your background, experience, and achievements.
Here’s how ChatGPT can help:
“I want to optimise my LinkedIn profile to help me search for a new job. Please give me the following:
Being active on LinkedIn is crucial for increasing your visibility as a job seeker. Your goal is for prospective employers to see your content and be impressed by its value. But, sometimes it’s difficult to think of content ideas.
Here’s how ChatGPT can help:
“I want to build a personal brand on LinkedIn to help me with my job search. I am a {Current Job Title} in the {Current Industry} company looking for a {New Job Title} role in the {New Industry}.
Please give me 10 content ideas and hooks that will impress prospective employers and support my candidacy.”
Here’s where things get tricky. ChatGPT is great at generating ideas, but not so great at writing content. So, you’ll need to write the content yourself (which will actually benefit you and show prospective employers your personality too!). But, ChatGPT can still help a little.
Here’s how:
“From these ten content ideas, please write ten LinkedIn posts that will offer value to prospective employers at companies like UrbanPiper, Signifyd, and SEON, and will showcase my skills and experience to support my candidacy.”
But, although you’ve asked ChatGPT to write content for you, do not copy and paste its answers! Use its output as a guide for writing your own posts.
You may be writing fantastic posts on LinkedIn, but no one is seeing them. This is because you also need to spend time building a network and engaging with your community to get more and more eyes on your posts.
Here’s how ChatGPT can help:
Growing your network:
“LinkedIn gives me 100 connection requests per week. I am a {Job Title} looking for a new job in the {Industry}. I am building a personal brand to support my candidacy. Who should I connect with?”
Engaging with comments:
“I wrote a post on LinkedIn about {Post Overview}. Someone commented: "{Comment}”. I want to ask the commenter a question that provokes another comment and increases engagement. What should I reply? (Maximum 20 words).”
With the right prompts, ChatGPT can be a very helpful tool if you’re building a personal brand to support your job search. It’s particularly useful for creating structures and ideas but isn’t great at writing content human-sounding and engaging content.
Take ChatGPT’s advice with a pinch of salt and remember that the best content you can post will showcase your personality - something that AI can never achieve.
